Guesthouses
Guesthouses are similar to
youth hostels but without the regimented atmosphere and need for membership. Kyoto, a city with a long history of hosting guests from other countries, has more guesthouses than other Japanese cities, even Tokyo. Most are excellent places to stay with spotless facilities and helpful owners. Guesthouses usually have dorms which average 2,500 yen per person per night, and a variety of private rooms which average 3,500 yen per person per night.
