Youth hostels
Kyoto's youth hostels are similar to hostels elsewhere - a mixture of affordable dorms and private rooms without a whole lot of atmosphere. They can be noisy, but on the plus side they are used to people from overseas and are cleaner than many of their counterparts in other countries. A night in an average youth hostel goes for something like ¥3,200. They only accept cash. Membership may or may not be necessary.
