El área de Higashiyama es uno de los más característicos y que mejor definen a Kioto, siendo este muy rico en historia. En este área se encuentra el templo de Kiyomizu-dera, templo que pertenece al Patrimonio de la Humanidad, y también se puede encontrar muchos monumentos famosos y lugares de interés turístico que atraen a visitantes tanto de Japón como del mundo entero.
Esta área comienza en el colorido santuario sintoísta de Heian-jingu y finaliza en el Museo Metropolitano. Incluye a lugares tan singulares como son el templo de Kiyomizu-dera y su salto de agua Otowa-no-Taki, que se asemeja al “Sonido de las Plumas de una Cascada”.
