The Dance of the Gods and the Blue Dragon
Legend has it that Kyoto is protected on all sides by 4 Gods from time immemorial.
One such god is Seiryu, a sacred dragon guarding the Higashiyama area to east, where Kiyomizu-dera Temple is located. In fact, Seiryu is considered as the incarnation of a Buddhist Kannon, enlightened being of Mercy and Compassion, mainly worshiped in Kiyomizu-dera Temple.
Seiryu is revered for watching over Kyoto day and night without rest to protect the people from misfortune.
In deep appreciation of Seiryu, a Buddhist ritual called Kiyomizu-dera Seiryu-e began 7 years ago. A dragon procession held in spring and autumn snakes its way around the temple and its main approach. March 15, 16, 17, April 3, September 15, 16, and 17.
The image of Seiryu was completely designed by renowned costume designer Emi Wada and was constructed with donations and cooperation from Kyoto-based traditional arts craftsmen.
