Taking a taxi is a convenient way to get around the city's tourist attractions. There are taxi stands at major stations such as Kyoto Station, but the number of taxis is limited and long lines form during tourist seasons. It may even be difficult to hail a taxi that is running on the road. Plan accordingly by using a taxi-dispatch service app, for example. Most taxis fit four passengers, excluding the driver, but some minivan-type taxis are also available. The initial fare is fixed, after which the fare is added according to the distance traveled and waiting time. Additional late-night surcharges may apply in the evening and late at night. Some taxi companies may offer wheelchair-accessible rides, so please inquire individually (reservations are required).
Just be aware that some drivers may not speak English well, so explaining your destination may be difficult. Also, occasionally suitcases do not fit in the vehicle, and some taxis do not accept credit cards. For simple and secure service, it is recommended that you use a Foreign Friendly TAXI or a Taxi dispatching application on your smart device.
Foreign Friendly TAXI
Kyoto’s Foreign Friendly TAXI System tries to make taxis more accessible for visitors to the city, with larger vehicles to fit bigger luggage, foreign language speaking drivers (including English and Chinese), and vehicles that accept credit card payment. These taxis are clearly distinguished as “Foreign Friendly TAXI” and there are separate taxi stands in front of the JR Kyoto Station’s two major exits.
*Please note that the number of Foreign Friendly TAXIs are limited, so please also use regular taxis.
Taxi APP
Japan offers a few options for taxi-dispatch applications for your smart devices. Using these apps, you can easily convey your destination, and use credit cards as well.
- Go: (App Languages: English, Japanese)
- Uber: (multi-language)
- DiDi: (App Languages:English, Chinese, Spanish, Japanese)
Points to note when taking a taxi
Avoid getting in and out of taxis near intersections, and use official taxi stands at train stations, hotels, etc. as much as possible
