Higashiyama (Kiyomizu-dera Temple)
■Access from Kyoto Station
To get to the Higashiyama area from Kyoto Station, we recommend a combination of train and bus.
A general route search shows that the shortest route is to take a city bus to the Gojozaka bus stop, but this bus can be very crowded. Avoid traveling by bus to your destination as much as possible.
If you are using JR, take a train from Kyoto Station to Tofukuji Station on the JR Nara Line or Yamashina Station on the JR Biwako Line/Kosei Line, which is one stop away.
From Tofukuji Station, transfer to the Keihan Railway and get off at Kiyomizu-Gojo Station, which is about a 25-minute walk.
From JR Yamashina Station, transfer to the Tozai Subway Line and get off at Higashiyama Station.
From Higashiyama Station, it takes about 35 minutes to arrive at Kiyomizu-dera Temple via scenic roads such as Nene-no-michi, Ninenzaka, and Sannenzaka.
To utilize a one-day subway/bus pass, take the Subway Karasuma Line from Kyoto Station, transfer to the Subway Tozai Line at Karasuma Oike Station, and get off at Higashiyama Station. Alternatively, the route from Kyoto Station on the Subway Karasuma Line to Kujo Station, which is one stop away, and then take City Bus No. 202 or 207 from the Oishibashi stop located nearest to Kujo Station to Gojozaka is recommended as it is relatively uncrowded both in the car and on the road.
■Access from Shijo Kawaramachi (Keihan Gion-shijo Station/Hankyu Kyoto Kawaramachi Station)
The route from Shijo Kawaramachi to Kiyomizu-dera Temple includes Hanamikoji Street and Yasaka-jinja Shrine, making it a fun area to stroll around.
We highly recommend that you head there on foot. If you have a hard time walking for a long time, take City Bus No. 207 from Shijo Kawaramachi bus stop and get off at Kiyomizu-michi bus stop.
It takes about 10 minutes from there. However, please note that it may take longer due to bus schedule disruptions and road conditions.
